B2B buyers don't buy when they trust you

By Abdalla Elshahhat ·

B2B buyers don't buy when they trust you. They buy when they've moved through three stages of trust, in order.

1. Credibility. The buyer believes you understand their world. Not your product, not your category, their actual operating reality. Specific, defensible content builds this. Vague thought-leadership doesn't.

2. Competence. The buyer believes you can actually do what you say. This comes from proof. Case studies, named clients, before-and-after numbers, references they can call. My team took an indirect distributor business from $5M to a record $15M year in 18 months, with 2 Regional Sales Managers running the territories. That builds competence. We helped many leading companies doesn't.

3. Intent. The buyer believes you'll actually deliver this for them specifically, not just for someone else. This happens in the discovery conversation. How deep are your questions? Are you willing to disqualify? Are you comfortable saying this isn't a fit for us?

Most content stops at stage one. Most pitch decks stop at stage two. The reps who win at stage three are the ones willing to lose the deal in front of the buyer.

Content gets you to credibility. Proof gets you to competence. Honesty gets you to intent.

Skip any of the three and you lose to someone who didn't.
